Effects of Anesthesia on Newborn Infant Delivered by Cesarean Section

Abstract
The effects of anesthesia on the clinical conditions of the newborn infants following cesarean section has been investigated. The results obtained were as follows;
From April 1970 to September 1971, there were 1, 552 deliveries at Korea University Medical College Hospital, inclusive of 155 cesarean section (9.98%).
1. Among 155 cesarean sections, 119 (7.66%) were primary sections and 36 (2.32%) repeat.
2. The youngest maternal age was 20 year and the oldest 43 year old, with the highest incidence (52.9%) between 25 and 29 years of age.
3. There were 83 (53.5%) of primipara and 72 (46.5%) of multipara.
4. Main indication for operation was cephalopelvic disproportion (31.0%), previous cesarean section (23.2%), prolonged labor (8.4%) and placenta previa (7.7%).
5. Majority of the newborn (61.3%) weighed at birth between 3, 000 and 4,000gm.
6. Evaluation of clinical condition of newborn by Apgar score one minute after delivery revealed that approximately 75% of infants had highest score (8-10), and 6% of babies had lowest (1-4).
7. In reviewing the complications following cesarean section, 15 (10.6%) of the total cases required resuscitation soon after delivery, 11 (7.77o) developed respiratory distress syndrome, and 6 (4. 2%) revealed weak sucking power.
8. There were 13 stillbirths and 5 neonatatal deaths and the gross perinatal mortality was 11.60%. The type of anesthesia seems not affect perinatal mortality substantially. However, the complications of labor thus affect fetal and neonatal losses.
